On March 26-29, 2020, Barking Sphinx Performance Society was prepared to host the 7th Annual Vancouver Improvised Music Meeting: three nights of creative improvisation, featuring internationally acclaimed guest artists alongside some of Vancouver’s finest innovators.

Due to COVID-19, the festival was cancelled.

Our special guests for this year would have included Chicago multi instrumentalist Angel Bat Dawid, Toronto based saxophonist/composer Karen Ng and Amsterdam-based US drummer and sound designer Frank Rosaly. We will bring all three artists to Vancouver when it is safe and possible to do so.

For the time being, we are pleased to present six solo improvisations recorded in isolation by the local artists who were to be part of the 2020 IMM.

Barking Sphinx Performance Society was established in 1998 to support the creation, production and presentation of contemporary music for small ensembles. The Society also aims to foster multi-media and interdisciplinary collaboration in the creation and presentation of new work; to educate Canadian audiences about creative music in general; and to enhance the development of the arts and cultural heritage of British Columbia.

Barking Sphinx Performance Society is grateful to work in community on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations.
